[edit] Software and Tarot

There are various ways in which software is used for tarot purposes.

Various programmes exist to assist tarot enthusiasts to either generate readings, play the game, or organise one's tarot collection.

Below are software programmes

[edit] warning: "visual tarot" software scam
folks from the above software company have persistently caused havoc on tarotpedia and other places. Please see the Association for Tarot Studies Newsletter article on the software: Visual Tarot Program – Caveat emptor.

[edit] development of tarot software over time

Tarot software development should be treated like any other software development project. Look at the real world thing and write your code to reflect that. While there are those who argue that, what you see is all that's important, this attitude is (both from a software design point of view and a tarot point of view) not desirable.

With regards to 'reading' spreads, an ideal tarot emulator/simulator will have the following properties

  • The ability to mimic the shuffling of cards
  • The ability to choose, from the deck, cards from wherever the user wishes
  • Deck cutting into various sub-stacks
  • Card reversals, or fixing them to their upright position only
  • Personal meanings for each of the cards, in their relative position within a spread, and relative their adjacent cards (this last is what makes the automated spread somewhat more complex to achieve)
  • The ability to add spreads in an easy manner
  • Choice of decks
  • The ability to compare the same card from various decks, and to zoom-in on various details

[edit] game of tarot

The tarot game (as a standard card game) has a long and very active international presence, and online gaming is becoming popular.

For playing the game on one's own computer, here is a list of software available

  • Le Tarot - available for Apple Macs, Linux, and Windows. The programme allows for personal play as shareware, and may be updated by purchase option for further options.
  • Tarobot-available for Windows. Allows play against AI, enables 3,4 and 5 players, and allows customised Tarot card images.
  • Thanos Cardgames- Play against computer AI, includes many game programmes such as Troggu, Tarocco Siciliano, and Tarocchi Lombardi.
  • TaroTux - Java based tarot game, featuring Tux the penguin.

[edit] tarot reading generators

These are by far the most common forms of available software.
