Characteristics of deck

The Besancon (in French, Besançon) style deck is many characteristics similar to the Marseille, save that cards II and V depict Junon and Jupiter (instead of the Marseille's Popess and Pope).

The Besancon decks are also at times referred to as the 'Swiss pattern', though other decks, such as the Schaffhouse (that does nnot have Junon and Jupiter), have also been so called.

Historical notes

It is likely that the Besancon derives from a Marseille-type pattern, with representations clearly denoting a Roman Catholic (Pope) element removed.
